A multidisciplinary, international conference on the protection of cultural heritage under threat of warfare will be held at the Lebanese American University in Beirut/Byblos from October 23rd to 26th 2013.

The aim of this conference will be to raise awareness of the importance of protecting cultural heritage in times of armed conflict. A central question is of how international guidelines regarding the treatment of cultural property can be best implemented and maintained in current and future conflicts, taking into account recent archaeological, political and military developments.

Potential topics may include, but are not limited to: Damage reports of cultural heritage in areas currently subject to violence; Risk assessment of areas under threat of potential violence; International rules and regulation regarding cultural property, their ratification and maintenance.; examples of success stories & lessons learned; the use and importance of cultural heritage in the establishment of long-lasting peace in post-war situations.

Presentations should be 25 minutes long. Please send abstract proposals of no more than 300 words to Lydia.langerwerf@lau.edu.lb before February 28th 2013. Notification of acceptance will be sent no later than 28th of March 2013. The conference is organised by LAU’s School of Arts and Sciences. Queries should be addressed to dr. The conference fee will be: $ 75,-

For Students/Unemployed: $ 50,-

Per Day: $ 30,-
